Re-Assessment of the water Resources and Demand of the Island of Cyprus (September 2002)

The Water Development Department (WDD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), carried out a reassessment of the water resources of Cyprus. The project, carried out in the period of 2000 to 2002, was undertaken in the light of water scarcity aggravated by long lasting and recurring droughts, which threaten the base of the country's economy.
The project had two immediate objectives:
          (i) A re-assessment of the country's water availability and water use in the main water management regions. The main activities included an update of the hydrology of the island, a review of the present hydrogeologic conditions of the aquifers, and a revision of water demand on the Island; and
          (ii) A review of water management policy options.
The project produced intermediate outputs and collateral outputs, including an evaluation of trends in recorded rainfall, suggestions for the improvement of tools for data handling and analysis, assessment of the adequacy of existing data collection networks, and a review of the existing legal and institutional framework that governs the current water management policies.
The reports contain extensive information that will prove useful not only to policy makers but also executives and those technocrats charged with the responsibility of developing strategies and institutional frameworks for water supply, irrigated agriculture and other sectors that depend on water.
